Designing, building and selling homes isn’t what it used to be. Now, women should be thought of as a majority in all of those processes. At the recent SXSW Conference, top housing leaders discussed the changing dynamics of the female homebuyer.
My home was built in 1964. If I bought it when it was built, I would not have been able to sign the mortgage without a male cosigner regardless of my income. With the Equal Credit Opportunity Act in 1974, women were then allowed to sign a mortgage alone.
In that 50-year timespan a lot has changed for women in housing.
The joy of building a custom home is the opportunity to design every detail to your individual taste. But architects and builders know a few things that most people would never think of adding to their wish list.
Items that add to a healthy home environment or make your life easier can be incorporated during the early design and build phase of a new home, typically at a lower cost or at least with less hassle than adding it later.
“These are exactly the kinds of ‘quiet wins’ that separate a nice custom home from a truly great one,” said Kristine Anderson, design principal and partner at PKA Architecture in Minneapolis.
