Giving Local: Keystone Science School Campership Program Changing Lives

At Keystone Science School we believe that every child deserves the chance to grow from a curious learner to a confident leader. Since its inception in 2007 the Campership program at KSS has given that opportunity to hundreds of deserving kids from all over Colorado.

Rider (not his real name) first came to KSS at the age of 8 as part of the Legacy Camp – a program to help children and families dealing with the loss of a family member. During his time at Legacy Camp, Rider learned a lot about himself and about how to process the emotions and circumstances around his personal loss; Rider’s father passed away when he was very young. KSS Legacy Camp staff recognized that Rider could probably benefit from spending a week at KSS during the summer as part of Discovery Camp – a week-long overnight program focusing on education, adventure, and personal growth.

Rider received a Campership that summer four years ago and has continued to come to KSS for Discovery Camp every year since. “Rider has grown into an amazing leader here at The Science School,” says Cat Scanlan, Assistant Camp Director and Legacy Camp volunteer. “His involvement in both Legacy Camp and Discovery Camp has made him a resource to other kids at camp. They go to him for help and he’s really risen to help others in his time here.” Even though he’s barely 13, Rider is already planning his future as a Camp Counselor at KSS.

A Campership is a partial or full scholarship that provides a deserving child with the opportunity to attend a week of Summer Camp at KSS – Day Camp, Discovery Camp (overnight), or Keystone Mountain Adventures (backcountry trips).

Slifer, Smith and Frampton Real Estate, the newly-establish SSF Foundation, as well as individual brokers at SSF Real Estate have been supporting the Campership Program at KSS since it began in 2007.

While financial need alone is enough to qualify many Colorado families for Campership support, other circumstances often come into play.
